TAKASHI MURAKAMI

Takashi Murakami is probably the most internationally recognized and prolific contemporary Japanese artist working today. He works in painting and sculpture —as well as what is conventionally considered commercial media —fashion, merchandise, and animation— and is known for blurring the line between high and low art. He coined the term superflat, which describes both the aesthetic characteristics of the Japanese artistic tradition. Superflat is also used to describe Murakami’s own artistic style and that of other Japanese artists he has influenced such as Mr., Chiho Aoshima and Aya Takano. His publication company KaiKai KiKi Co, formally publishes the offset lithographs that are typically released in editions of 300 and reproduce his iconic smiling flowers as well as iconic characters that appear throughout his work. Murakami's work is exhibited internationally and in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo, Japan).
